A new chapter was written in the history of the Woodlawn Senior on October 30, 2013 when Center’s Legacy Tree was unveiled. The excitement and anticipation had been building over the last two years as members and friends purchased “leaves” to fund the project. Committee chairpersons, Delores Douglass and Frank Parker praised the purchasers for the confidence the purchasers displayed in them, sight unseen, that provided sufficient funds to fully satisfy the cost of the wall sculpture. The Gold Silver and Bronze leaves randomly scattered provide a beautiful reflection above the Trunk of the tree. Rocks at the base are display the names of individuals in leadership positions at the opening of the WSC or in the positions at the time of installation. The tree can be further expanded if requests exceed the current number of available leaves.

Also in attendance was Shelly Lohmann, representing the Vendor, W&E Baum Designers and Manufacturers of the Tree. The brief program was marked by the apparently heartfelt remarks from committee chairman, Mrs. Douglass, who shared about the fundraising venture. She expressed the need for more space for the cramped current facility whose membership and attendance has grown consistently each year since it’s opening in 2006 when then Director, Ashaki Innis welcomed its first member, Jean Parks. Musical selections from Lorna Terry, Wind Beneath My Wings and I Believe I Can Fly, reflected the theme of the occasion, continued growth.
